Aquamarine

Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a variety of beryl and is well known as March's birthstone. This stone is most commonly found in Brazil, but also occurs in Zambia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Mozambique and Madagascar. We are going to explore the history behind the use of aquamarine and how it can benefit us all (even if you are not a March baby).

The History of Aquamarine
Aquamarine is derived from the latin words "aqua" and "marine", meaning water and sea respectively. This stone is currently used to celebrate the Pisces zodiac, 19th wedding anniversaries and March births, but it has had many other uses throughout history.
In Roman mythology, it was said that Neptune - God of the Sea- used aquamarine as talisman. This led to Ancient Roman fisherman using aquamarine to provide protection from sea monsters whilst at sea and for luck in catching plenty of fish. Roman doctors are said to have also used aquamarine to treat bloating.
Saint Thomas was said to travel outside of the Roman empire often by sea and became closely associated with aquamarine.
The Ancient Egyptians and Sumerians chose this stone as a symbol of everlasting youth and happiness. Archeologists have since discovered beaded aquamarine jewellery within the tombs of mummies.
Around 2000 years ago, Greeks began to carve designs into aquamarine stones to create Intaglios. Their designs were often based on the Greek God of the Sea, Poseidon.
Aquamarine became the March birthstone because of its ties to the sea and consequently the Pisces zodiac (19th February to 20th March).
Aquamarine's Energies
Aquamarine is closely linked to the throat chakra (the centre of communication and self expression).

Physical

Aquamarine is known as the stone of breath, and is said to aid the healing of the respiratory system and to is used by those with hay fever or chronic allergies. It is said to have a cooling effect, possibly benefiting those with infections of the throat. Many people also place this stone on their tired eyes to benefit from its cooling. Aquamarine is also known to help balance the endocrine system, and promote health of gums and teeth.

Emotional
Aquamarine is a powerful cleanser of the emotional body and is said to aid open communication. It is said to help in bringing one's past thoughts to the surface so that they can be understood and released in order to move forward. It is a great stone to aid in overcoming trauma and anger.

Spiritual
This is a stone of empowerment. It helps one to realise that power does not have to be forceful. It can be used as a gateway crystal to the Divine Feminine.

With its beautiful light and tranquil blue hues, it is no surprise that it was considered to be the treasure of mermaids.
